Reflections from the ILACADA President

As this year’s ILACADA 2014 annual conference theme “Heard it Through the Grapevine: Collaboration in an Ever-Changing Environment” indicates, the organization has and continues to develop partnerships both within and outside of the state of Illinois. Late last year ILACADA partnered with the University of Southern Indiana and Indiana Academic Advising Network (IAAN), to offer a one-day “Diversity in Advising” drive-in Conference focusing on a series of timely topics and presentations to assist advisors in developing cultural competence. Most recently ILACADA began investigating a way to reach out to its Chicago-area membership through the formation of the Chicago Area Advisors Network (CAAN) committee. CAAN provides professional development, leadership opportunities, information sharing, and networking for advising professionals in and around the greater Chicago-area. For example, Chicago State University just partnered with ILACADA, whose leadership team visited the campus and facilitated a one-day professional development workshop for over 30 advisors on campus.  Later this year ILACADA will host a Careers and Advising conference at Eastern Illinois University that will highlight and address the ongoing need for integrating academic and career advising in our practice.

To date, ILACADA and its membership have spawned countless opportunities for individuals to network, collaborate, and share best practices with one another. I’m happy to report that ILACADA was one of the most visible allied groups present at this year’s NACADA Region V conference in Madison, WI.  Our members did an excellent job representing the organization by not only continuing to be involved with NACADA Region V leadership positions, but also presenting multiple concurrent sessions on a range of topics from technology to improving LGBTQ competencies to professional development.  ILACADA also hosted a memorable social event that saw advisors from Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan joining together to celebrate their hard work and accomplishments.  

ILACADA’s commitment to developing innovative strategies for engaging its membership is evident, and the organization’s commitment to evolving our practice is proof positive that we can connect and grow while also developing new and interesting ways to collaborate with others within the larger advising community.  We welcome your input and involvement with the organization – without which, we would undoubtedly not be able to survive and thrive to the extent we have since forming just a few short years ago.  It is with much gratitude that I continue to serve as your President and look forward to the year ahead. Thanks for all you do!

Advising in an ever-changing world

How do advisors do it? The rules, regulations, and requirements are constantly changing. When retention and enrollment are down university administrators look at advising – it must be the reason and the solution.  Just when you think you have your job figured out, it changes. Advisors are being asked to do more with less and navigate an ever-changing world of higher education in a tough job market for graduates.

The key to surviving all of this is flexibility, knowledge, and a sense of humor. Advisors have to be willing to change the way they do things and they must be information seekers. There is no room for complacency in the field of advising today. We must stay abreast of current trends in the advising world, we must stay informed of changes on our own campuses, and we must understand the types of student we work with and their needs.  Additionally, and probably most importantly, work should be fun! Sometimes all the changes and stress are just laughable, so do it….laugh.

I do not foresee that these changes will slow or stop anytime soon. We should embrace the challenges our jobs and our students present us with and remember that our role as advisors is an important one and many students would not graduate or achieve their career goals without us.  We have the ability to make positive differences in the lives of college students every day.  We must never forget that amidst the piles of paperwork and bureaucracy. 

ILACADA’s Second Annual Elections

Get involved in ILACADA’s (Illinois Academic Advising Association) second annual election by nominating yourself or a colleague to serve on the Executive Board, or as a chairperson of one of the standing committees.  Nominations are open for the following positions this year:

  • Vice President/President-Elect – three year term: one year as Vice President, one year as President, and one year as Past President.
    • The Vice President works with the president and acts as president in the absence of the president. Must have served a minimum of one year in an ILACADA leadership role prior to serving as vice president.
    • At-large member – two year term
      • The At-large members are representatives from the membership who have not previously held leadership positions within ILACADA.
      • Committee Chairs – one year term
        • Constitution Committee is required to draft, maintain, and interpret the constitution and bylaws of ILACADA. 
        • Membership and Elections Committee is responsible for maintaining a database of ILACADA members, notifying members when applications are up for renewal and seeking/recruiting new members as well as announcing and conducting elections. This includes notifying members of election status, eligibility and results.
        • Communications Committee is responsible for communication and promotion of the organization, including website, newsletters, social networking, news and press releases. 
        • Professional Development Committee is responsible for developing and organizing conferences, workshops, and educational events on behalf of the membership. 

To be included on the ballot, candidates must:

  • Secure a nomination – either by someone else, or by self-nomination
  • Be a member of ILACADA for 2014-2015 – see http://ilacada.org/ for membership information
  • Submit a statement of 250 words or fewer detailing how they envision themselves fulfilling the position for which they are running.  Voters want to know a little about the candidates’ backgrounds, experience and goals as well as why they are the best person for the position.  
  • Be Committed – be able to commit to attendance at meetings and conferences required by the position they’re seeking.  The Executive Board meets, in person, a minimum of 3 times yearly. Participation in ILACADA initiatives is an expectation of office. 

Nominations are due May 2nd, 2014
Candidate statements are due May 30th, 2014
Voting will be open June 16th through June 30th, 2014
Election results will be posted and new officers will be notified in early July
Terms of office will run August 1st through July 30th each year
